THE CRICKET GRANDFINAL
In perfect conditions on the last Friday of Term 1, the Lower Plenty cricket team made up of three grade 5’s and seven grade 4’s, all of which are 10 years and under took on the minor premiers from Holy Trinity. Having played Holy Trinity earlier in the season we knew we faced a hard task against a talented team of grade 6 boys on their home turf.
Although the LPPS team was young, they were extremely committed to preparing a game plan that was set to restrict Holy Trinity’s best batsmen. With two weeks to prepare for the grand final, the boys trained regularly at school during lunch time, occasionally during class time and once the captains took it upon themselves to organise a private training session after school. The training was so private, that even I as coach was not invited to it.
Before the game Lower Plenty won the toss and elected to bat in the day final.
The team batted well and were making great progress through the innings, cheered on by a sell-out crowd of 11 parents. A few of the boys hit some fantastic 4’s and 6’s, finally posting a score of 107 runs from 10 overs.
Partnership Scores
Brad & Jack – 19 runs
Cassius & Mitchell – 25 runs
Lockie & Nik – 14 runs
Matt & Guy - 17 runs
John & Darcy - 32 runs
Holy Trinity batted well during their innings with the progressive scores being almost identical. A contentious moment arose in the 4th over when a ball was hit sky high and appeared to be caught just inside the boundary, however both captains disputed the decision. The catch needed to be referred to the 3rd umpire Richard Carlyon. Where it was overturned and given not out and therefore 6 runs. This gave Holy Trinity momentum and during the middle of the innings it looked like they were going to cruise away to victory. With HolyTrinity needing only 2 runs off the final 2 overs to win. Amazingly the Lower Plenty boys showed the most extraordinary composure under pressure to bowl a disciplined line and length. The fielding was also exceptional with 3 wickets falling in the final over. Holy Trinity were unable to make the 2 runs required to win. The final score LOWER PLENTY 10/106 defeated HOLY TRINITY 6/105.

Thank you, to the parents who help transport the students on the day and to our large supporter base, also to my brother Brad from Yarrambat Primary School who gave our school the correct ball and equipment to practice with in the days prior.
